WHICH ONE ARE YOU?
We’re often asked, when people first come across electric bikes, who rides them?
We’re not sure why it’s such a mystery, perhaps it’s because e-bikes are still quite a new form of transport. To us, the people who have led the way are pioneers, creating of a new subculture of cycling freedom and fun. Occasionally looked down on by “proper cyclists” (and by more conservative bike shops), they are a growing band we’ve come to know and love. Every e-bike rider is different, every journey and challenge unique, but over the years patterns emerge, perhaps we could call them e-bike personalities.
We decided it would be fun to get together with artist Andrea Joseph (she loves bikes) and take an affectionate look at some of the characters who seem to crop up time after time.
Take a look and see if you can spot your e-bike personality…
1. The Adventurer
Optimistic and impatient, he delights in breezing up hills and exploring new worlds. (He just needs to know what’s over that next hill) Anonymous clothing allows him to adopt an alter ego easily; he generally favours a muted palette.
2. The Time Bandit
Clothing may be back to front or inside-out, and often comes with a smattering of toddler food. With a demanding job and precious little “me” time, she’d love to amble and take in the view, but has to ride faster than she’d like, as she’s so often late.
3. The Green Man
He transports produce from his allotment in an up-cycled pram attached to his bike. Clothes are generally a mix of long lasting favourites and charity shop finds. Indulgence for him is a glass of craft beer and ten minutes with a borrowed copy of the Guardian.
4. The Vintage Realist
A fair weather cyclist, she rides only for pleasure, but with a little electric assistance, she can keep up with the best of ‘em. Her look favours retro prints and plenty of colour. Life can sometimes be a battle between the pursuit of fitness and a love of cake.
5. The Techie
Never shy about his e-bike, he likes to keep abreast with the latest developments and is keen to share his knowledge. When out for a ride he’s regularly checking his phone for forum updates on new e-bikes. Yes, of course he works in computing.
6. The Free Spirit
When the weekend comes and the sun shines, she’s off to ride under big skies and enjoy life at a gentler pace (occasionally forgetting to turn on the power until she meets a hill).
So, do you identify with any of the above? Which would you like to be...
