Portuguese factory fire
Supply is now restored following factory fire
Two colleagues and one fire fighter were injured during a major incident on the morning of 15th June 2019 at our plant in Portugal, which destroyed our summer stock of bicycle frames.
The two staff aged 24 and 51 years who were both rushed to hospital have since made good recovery and we are so grateful that no lives were lost during a raging fire that completely destroyed our painting shop.
This was a very serious fire. In total 90 firefighters attended with 30 vehicles from 3 stations regionally and we owe them all a great debt of gratitude for their prompt and efficient control of the fire which was finally extinguished late that evening.
Investigations continue into how the fire broke out in a building where bike frames for Juicy and Neomouv are finished. More than 1000 frames were destroyed.
The impact on supply of Juicy and Neomouv bikes this summer has been enormous and has stretched both the patience of hundreds of customers hoping to receive their new bikes for the holiday season and the perseverance of staff breaking bad news and solving the difficult problem of replacing so many frames at short notice.
Local support from neighbouring factories has been immense and demonstrates a fine example of the heartening quality of our bike industry to rally to each other's aide. It seems we are all on the side of Two Wheels Good, competitors or not, and quite humbling to witness, genuinely appreciated.
As a consequence of that support and following a massive effort from colleagues across three continents as of 9th September our assembly is now producing bikes again.
We expect our first production following this awful disaster to commence this week.
Finally, after a frustrating summer we will begin delivering bikes to customers week beginning 23rd September, some 12 weeks after the devastating fire.
Sincerely, Juicy Bikes
